You probably won't break out into a Ryan Murphy produced mash up of two current top 40 pop tracks or a reconditioned Journey song, however, you might sing from the doors of this Darby Street cafe after sipping their house blend coffee.
Walk into this small, almost home-like closet space and be greeted with a organised collection of prints and cross stitch on one wall, old comics on the other and DIY shelves housing Glee's own roast behind the counter. Smooth Jazz tunes, quiet, simple.
As for the reason to be there. The coffee. My cold drip (made on a Costa Rican blend) was subtle in flavour and for a sensitive stomach a great option. There was no upset stomach after this cup of coffee. He had a flat white on the Glee house blend and it packed a deeper punch than the cold drip. I took a sip and the flavour was hearty, robust and bold. It didn't namby about or mince words.
Glee isn't big on food. There's a selection of cakes (the orange and almond cake was okay) and they also do toast. But don't visit Glee with the intention of having a full breakfast or lunch. It's the spot you have pre-breakfast coffee, sit and watch the world go by with a flat white, cold drip and a final piccolo to brave the day or just grab a cheeky take-away.
Oh, and a word to the wide? Decaf isn't an option known to the team at Glee. This shouldn't be an issue for what I'll gladly say is the best coffee I've had in Newcastle. -
